Les Quatre Fabuleux

Friday 14th March 2025, 7:30pm
University Church, OX1 4BJ

Vocatio:Responsio's fourth venture looks to revive a narrative diving head-first into obscurity, with musical director Samuel Oliver-Sherry leading the orchestra in a concerto by four violinists seldom heard today. The title and poster for this programme is inspired by The Beatles, and just like they did, we look to present this tradition as a trailblazing aesthetic with artists flourishing both collectively and individually, with a performance style unlike anything seen today.

Giovanni Battista Viotti: Concerto No.26 in B♭ Major
Pierre Baillot: Concerto No.3 in F Major
Pierre Rode: Concerto No.7 in A Minor
Rodolphe Kreutzer: Concerto No.19 in D Minor

The Boy "Wunders"

Monday 28th October 2024, 7:30pm
Holywell Music Room, OX1 3SB

In the debut concert of Oxford’s new ensemble Vocatio:Responsio, we will demystify the concept of the ‘wunderkind’ in Mozart and Mendelssohn’s early work. Whether through Mozart’s cultural exposure through European tours, or Mendelssohn’s excellent educational provision at home, this programme musically represents their differing pedagogical journeys as emerging composers that develop through experience, albeit from a lofty starting point.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

  • Symphony in E♭ Major, K.16
  • Symphony in F Major, K.112

Felix Mendelssohn

  • Symphony in E Minor, MWV N3
  • Symphony in D Minor, MWV N7

L'Armonia: Rules vs Innovation

Monday 2nd December 2024, 8:00pm
Keble College Chapel, OX1 3QD

In the second of Vocatio:Responsio’s concerts in the 2024-25 season, we explore the struggle between harmonic, technical rigour and genuine humane innovation in eighteenth-century music, with a particularly overt case study of Vivaldi’s Op.3 and Op.8 sets of concerti a representation of this.

Unico Wilhelm Wassenaer: Concerto in A Major, No.3 from Sei Concerti Armonici

Georg Muffat: Sonata in D Major, No.1 from Armonico Tributo

Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber: Trio in D Major, No.6 from Harmonia Artificioso-Ariosa

Antonio Vivaldi

  • Concerto in E Minor, No.4 from L'Estro Armonico, Op.3
  • Antonio Vivaldi: Concerto in E♭ Major “La tempesta di mare”, No.5 from Il cimento dell’armonia e dell’inventione, Op.8

Stabat Mater

Monday 3rd February 2025, 8:30pm
Holywell Music Room, OX1 3SB

Join Vocatio:Responsio for their third concert of the academic year, a late-night, intimate feast of choral music at the Holywell Music Room when Emanuele d’Astorga’s eighteenth-century setting of the thirteenth-century Christian hymn Stabat Mater takes centre stage, a piece actually first performed in Oxford in 1713.

Tomaso Albinoni: Symphony in B♭ Major, Si6

Emanuele d’Astorga: Stabat Mater in C Minor (1713)
